Food Breakups

For the most part, I’m a lucky gal. Sure, when the season arises, I get the sniffles, but as far as food is concerned, I have no allergies. And as far as I’m concerned, food allergies are the worst. During my tenure as a junior high school teacher, I witnessed a child have a terrifying reaction just because he touched something that had peanuts in it. JUST TOUCHED IT!

Although I can eat pretty much consume anything, as I mature, I realize that although a food item won’t send me to the hospital, it could send me to bed. My life is not in danger, but my body now processes things differently. Dare I say, less efficiently.

I am a flavored soda water addict, and why not? It’s sugar free, zero calories, and doesn’t contain any alcohol, which is a bonus since I start drinking it by 10am. About 2 weeks ago, I developed excruciating abdominal pains. I couldn’t sleep, and exercise was miserable. My heart knew the culprit, but my mind did not want to accept it. After a week of complete anguish, I made the gut-wrenching decision to lay off the bubbles. It was like a breakup. For fear that I’d burst into tears, I refused to be in the same room with a can of La Croix – grapefruit flavor, to be exact. I mourn the loss to this day; however, last night, I finally let myself have a half a glass of soda water. True, it was not my former paramour, pamplemousse La Croix, but I slowly dipped my foot back into the soda water filled pool. And you know, what? I’m OK.

What I’m trying to say here is this. Perhaps cheese doesn’t make you break out into hives or bread is not the catalyst to an awful day in the bathroom, but if a consumable makes your body feel uneasy in any way, perhaps it’s time to lay off the stuff. I know, life isn’t fair, but the good news is, you don’t have to divorce these foods forever. You just have to make them acquaintances instead of part of your best friend circle. It’s how adults handle breakups. Yeah, at first you need some time away, but once you’ve reset your body, a short get together from time to time won’t kill you. Being a mature adult can be a pain, but in the end, it’s the right thing to do.
